On his recent album Living Daylight (Burger), Toronto’s Michael Rault is uncanny in his allegiance to Marc Bolan’s T. Rex. Sometimes a lack of originality doesn’t much matter, though, especially when your music provides such a fizzy blast. While many of the album’s tracks are swaddled in layers of glammy fuzz guitar as they wriggle like an eel across grooves accentuated by well-placed handclaps and occasional conga patterns, the sunny ballad “Lovers Lie” is a throwback to hooky 70s AM radio that suggests Paul McCartney going lo-fi. But that’s certainly more the exception than the rule; even Rault’s sweet, slightly androgynous voice recalls Bolan’s upper-register warble. What ultimately sets Living Daylight apart is its no-nonsense concision—Rault’s determined not to overstay his welcome—and I don’t know if I’ve heard a record this year that’s more fun. —Peter Margasak
