I get the impression that Serengeti (aka David Cohn) has more fun rapping than most MCs out there, and that's partly because he does so much of it using so many different personas: so far this year the Chicago-bred rhymesayer has appeared on an odd collaborative pop EP with Son Lux and Sufjan Stevens called Beak & Claw and his own Kenny Dennis EP, his fourth release exploring the rich alternate universe of the titular blue-collar Chicagoan. Now he's rolling out an LP called C.A.R. (Anticon), produced by Odd Nosdam (Clouddead) and Jel (Subtle, Themselves), and it's a doozy. While the tracks juggle a motley collection of sounds—woozy boom-bap, fatback funk horn samples, thick futuristic synths—Serengeti drops free-associative rhymes in his casual flow, rapping about being a scuba coach and working with expensive film crews. C.A.R. is an eccentric collection from a dude who's long thought of himself as an outsider, but Serengeti creates some of its best moments by taking a swig from the pop cup—the haunting but accessible "Go Dancin," for instance, ought to be a radio hit. —Leor Galil Hannibal Buress headlines; Kyle Kinane, Rockie Fresh, Jel, Serengeti, and DJ Tony Trimm open.
