War
Fritz Lang collaborated with Bertolt Brecht in creating this 1943 account of the assassination of Reinhard Heydrich, the Reichsprotektor of Czechoslovakia. For once, the needs of art and propaganda meet: the film contains several interesting twists on familiar Lang themes, describing the events that follow a murder rather than those leading up to it. Brecht cunningly has his Gestapo agents speaking in the patois of Chicago gangsters, and Lang conceives the Czechoslovakian underground as a benign parallel to the vast criminal organizations that figure in so many of his films.
