Tony Richardson's 1969 production, starring Nicol Williamson as Hamlet and Marianne Faithfull as Ophelia. Richardson uses the converted Victorian Round House in London, as well as the cellars of the building and surrounding neighborhood, to create a Hamlet in which the court is a barbaric community and Hamlet a complete cynic. Williamson's characterization—Hamlet as a nervous, energetic intellectual, resentful of the role that destiny has imposed on him—keeps contemporary psychology uppermost. A frenzied production, shot mainly in close-up, this is a Hamlet to make Jan Kott happy and incense the traditionalists. With Gordon Jackson, Anthony Hopkins, Judy Parfitt, and Mark Dignam.
