Looking placid, well fed, and entirely too old for this kind of thing, Steven Seagal plays an FBI agent posing as an inmate at a grandly reopened Alcatraz who has to save the day when thugs lay siege to the island fortress, hoping to snatch a condemned man and track down the gold bullion he stole years earlier. The title of this dismal action flick refers to the Seagal character's having suffered a near-death experience, though he's returned from the other side with a remarkable lack of insight. Don Michael Paul directed his own screenplay, and Hong Kong veteran Xin Xin Xiong choreographed the fight sequences, the best of which is a high-kicking conflict between Nia Peeples and rapper Ja Rule. With Morris Chestnut, Tony Plana, and Kurupt. 99 min.
