Hair

The body shows a few signs of life in Milos Forman's earnest 1979 attempt to revive Ragni, Rado, and MacDermot's flower-child musical of the 60s. Everyone seems sincere and bursts with energy, yet there's a strange lack of conviction: Forman has taken the honorable route by refusing to treat the material as easy nostalgia, but the confrontational sentiments no longer have the substance to survive his straightforward presentation. The feelings are disassociated, belonging to a battle that was fought, lost, and forgotten a long time ago. Twyla Tharp's choreography aims for a sense of anarchy and freedom, but Forman's strange editing of the musical numbers consistently interrupts the flow of movement, isolating the dancers in dispiriting close-ups. With John Savage, Treat Williams, and Beverly D'Angelo.
