Gypsy-Jazz Odyssey | Chicago Reader

Gypsy-Jazz Odyssey

The title may sound like something lifted from Spinal Tap, but this 2006 video documentary offers a watchable examination of the subgenre created by French Gypsy guitarist Django Reinhardt in the 30s. Director Eric Hentemann focuses on contemporary Chicago guitarist Alfonso Ponticelli, who came to the music via flamenco, and his band, Swing Gitan. In addition to local performances and interviews with the players, Hentemann includes footage shot during the band's trip to the annual Django Reinhardt Festival in France. 75 min.
