Guzzlemug, Arctic Sleep, Arbogast

When: Thu., Feb. 28, 9 p.m. 2013
Price: $7 donation
Local trio Arbogast, formed in 2009, have taken a while to arrive at their first full-length, but not because guitarist Mike Scheid, bassist Aaron Roemig, and drummer Mike Rataj have been dicking around—they’ve already released a demo, a split seven-inch, and an EP. The new I (Nefarious Industries) is 11 tracks of complex, engagingly brainy metal, driven by righteous political fury—the band reserves a special place in Hades for the rich and exploitative—and leavened with quiet, clean breaks whose breathing room really just sets up the next charge of jackhammer force. You’d never mistake Arbogast for anything but modern, savvy metal—the kind that’s far enough post-everything to have gotten all the way back to the stone age—and like the best of this new breed, they know when to sound a bit like early Iron Maiden. —Monica Kendrick Guzzlemug headlines; Arctic Sleep and Arbogast open.
