When Robert Pollard reunited the classic 90s Guided by Voices lineup in 2010—bassist Greg Demos, guitarists Tobin Sprout and Mitch Mitchell, and drummer Kevin Fennell—he claimed it was a one-off get-together. That assertion quickly went by the wayside, though: they're not only still at it, but they've released two new albums this year, with a third on the way (and that's not even counting two Pollard solo records). GBV have reclaimed their old modus operandi too, as the existence of those three albums makes plain—they've crammed the first two with 21 songs apiece, only one of which clocks in at more than four minutes, and recorded most of the music in makeshift studios. I prefer June's Class Clown Spots a UFO to January's Let's Go Eat the Factory, which has more ballads than usual, because it's got fewer of the band's new experiments with keyboards and electronics—that is, it sounds more like vintage GBV. That means bringing classic-rock throttle to Pollard's hook-crammed tunes—and no version of GBV is more fun to watch. —Peter Margasak 18+
