Grudge Match

Rated PG-13 · 114 minutes · 2013

Robert De Niro, 70, and Sylvester Stallone, 67, parody their old boxing pictures in this geezer comedy recycled from Neil Simon's The Sunshine Boys. Instead of an old vaudeville team, they're aging Pittsburgh palookas who fought each other for the light heavyweight title three decades earlier and now, through the increasingly common plot device of a viral video, win the chance to pummel each other again in a lucrative exhibition match. The jokes are clumsy, the dramatic scenes stale and lifeless; like the climactic bout, the movie itself is a freak show, a fantasy matchup between two icons with nothing better to do than spend down their legacies. Peter Segal (Anger Management) directed; with Kim Basinger, Alan Arkin, and Kevin Hart, providing what little comic juice the movie has to offer.
