Grifters

When: Thu., Jan. 15, 9 p.m. 2015
Price: $15, $100 TNK pass
In the 90s, the Grifters were one of rock ’n’ roll’s most reliable purveyors of unpredictable good times. Loud, sweaty, and chaotic, the Memphis-based quartet often seemed to ride its songs like a rodeo cowboy perched atop a bucking horse, trying desperately not to get thrown off as the tunes lurched from misshapen, bluesy riffs to insistent pop hooks. But even when the songs fell apart, the Grifters got right back up and kept going. The fun wound down in 2000, but everyone stayed sharp by playing in other bands, including Dragoon, Porch Ghouls, and Those Bastard Souls. In 2013, the Grifters reunited in their hometown for the opening-night screening of the documentary film Meanwhile in Memphis: The Sound of a Revolution, and the group has been playing occasional gigs ever since. Tonight’s concert is part of the Tomorrow Never Knows festival. —Bill Meyer
