When an eco-friendly music festival serves all its beer and wine in 100 percent biodegradable corn-based cups, you know it means business. West Town's second annual Green Music Fest, located on Chicago between Ashland and Noble, runs this Saturday and Sunday from noon-10 PM and features a main music stage (booked by House Call Entertainment, which also books Subterranean) and a DJ stage. Saturday's lineup, headlined by reggae legends the Wailers, also includes the Aggrolites, Deal's Gone Bad, Furious Frank, and T. Duggins of the Tossers; Klever, Zebo, Intel, and others spin at the DJ stage. Sunday features performances by Maps & Atlases and Fang Island, who both play the night before at Subterranean, as well as by Cloud Cult and former Pedro the Lion front man David Bazan; Proper Villains, Gant-Man, Demchuk, and others DJ throughout the day. The Green Family Fun Fest at Armour and Chicago offers kids' and family-oriented green activities such as T-shirt refashioning, recycled arts and crafts, and organic cooking demonstrations. Other green initiatives include a cell-phone recycling drop-off, composting options, a free bike valet courtesy of the Active Transportation Alliance, a green vendor village, generators powered at least partially by biodiesel produced from food waste and plant materials, and a partnership with Green Planet Bottling to distribute bottles of water that require 65 percent less energy to make than ordinary plastic bottles. Admission is a $5 suggested donation, and a portion of the proceeds benefits both the West Town Chamber of Commerce and the Chicago Center for Green Technology.
