Supported by the Chicago Center for Green Technology, the eco-friendly Green Music Fest runs Sat-Sun 6/25-6/26 on Damen between North and Schiller (rather than on a stretch of Chicago Avenue like last year). The festival's to-do list includes providing guests with biodegradable drinking cups, biodiesel-generated power, water bottles made from plant-based plastics, free bike parking, and a host of recycling options, as well as hosting an impressive lineup of live music on two stages, this year programmed by Big Creek Productions and House Call Entertainment (which books Subterranean and the Beat Kitchen). On Saturday Yo La Tengo headlines the south stage, with the Life and Times and Secret Colours supporting; the north stage features Trampled by Turtles, the Meters Experience, and Midwest Hype. (Ira Kaplan from YLT also DJs at Big Star on Sun 6/26.) On Sunday the Thermals, Soft Speaker, and Blane Fonda play the south stage, while the north has Musikanto, Tight Phantomz, and headliners Les Savy Fav —keep an eye out for their unhinged front man, Tim Harrington, who's likely to run through the crowd looking for the best garbage can, recycling bin, or Port-O-Let to climb onto (or into) for a few choruses. Local retail, food, and arts and crafts vendors will be on hand throughout the weekend, and "green" businesses will demonstrate everything from solar-powered devices to organic food. The Green Family Fun Fest features kid-friendly activities like recycled arts and crafts, DIY musical instruments, organic cooking demos, clowns, face painting, and children's music. Festival hours are noon till 10 PM both days, and admission is a $5 suggested donation. For more info see Fairs & Festivals listings by day, call 312-850-9390, or visit greenmusicfestchicago.com.
