I imagine that Charlie Parr will be tickled to play on the Green Music Fest’s bike-powered stage, which gets its juice from eight riders on stationary bicycles; he’s mounted a rack on his car in case he feels like taking his own bike on tour. But the Minnesota-based folk-blues singer doesn’t really need any electricity at all; with his gruff voice, which is getting suppler as he ages, and his overtone-rich guitar and banjo picking, he has such a strong presence that he could deliver a commanding performance all by his lonesome in an open field or blacked-out building. But when Parr does decide to accept a little help, the effects are especially transcendent. Virginia’s Black Twig Pickers amp up the fervor of the traditional gospel tunes they cover with Parr on 2010’s Glory in the Meeting House (House of Mercy), and Alan Sparhawk’s minimal accompaniment adds eeriness and harmonic depth to Parr’s gorgeous, reflective instrumentals on his latest album, this year’s Hollandale (Chaperone). You’ll have chances to hear Parr both indoors and out tonight: in addition to his festival set, he’ll play an afterfest party at the Beat Kitchen. —Bill Meyer
