Chicago heavy-psych quartet the Great Society Mind Destroyers very quietly dropped their debut album, Spirit Smoke, earlier this year on a tiny European cassette label called Sloow Tapes; this release party is for the LP version on Slow Knife, a small local outfit run by David Halstead (who also does PR for Thrill Jockey). GSMD have been an amazing live band for quite some time, and Spirit Smoke captures a lot of that energy. For all their skillful rifling of the guitar-effects trick bag and the eerie reverb on their Timmy's-fallen-down-the-well vocals, what really makes the album soar is the rhythm section's fluidity with a groove, and the interplay between the back line and the rest of the group gives the music a richness that rewards repeated—nay, obsessive—listening. The into-the-wind Spacemen 3 chug-chug of "Divinorum" and the R&B-like rubbery bounce of "Kamsara Drag" assure listeners that no matter how far out there things get up top, there's always a strong and steady trip guide who'll have some cushions ready when you come down. —Monica Kendrick Rodeo, Velocicopter, and T'Bone open.
