An 18-year-old and her ex-stepfather, a writer, take a road trip that falls somewhere between a family vacation and an abduction, in this 2008 comic drama by Lee Blessing. But despite the resemblance to Lolita, the guy is no perv. Though Blessing's script has a strong emotional arc, he sometimes sacrifices nuance for dramatic effect--particularly in his ending, which wraps up the action too neatly and leaves a bad taste. Joe Jahraus's stark midwest premiere for Profiles Theatre is superb. Darrell W. Cox's self-conscious nonchalance is a perfect fit for the stepdad, a complex mix of compassion and self-absorption, good intentions and habitual detachment. And high school senior Allison Torem is unerring and devastating as the damaged girl, furious and fragile. --Laura Molzahn
