Gotye's "Somebody That I Used to Know" is an unlikely candidate to become an explosively viral hit. Its verses, built on xylophone and staccato acoustic guitar, sound like something by a painfully quirky Brooklyn home-recording project, and its chorus aims for Sting-like grandeur and only mostly succeeds; in any case it lacks the hookiness of a juggernaut like "Call Me Maybe." But since its release last year the song has taken on a second life as an Internet meme, trailing only "Maybe" in inspiring YouTube covers, tributes, and parodies. The rest of the 2011 album Making Mirrors (Universal), from which "Somebody" comes, is even odder: its back half is loaded with Loggins-and-Messina-style yacht rock and baffling tracks like "State of the Art," which sounds like Oingo Boingo trying to do reggae. —Miles Raymer Missy Higgins and Jonti open.
