Gossip Wolf: A swell season for a wedding

Oscar winner Marketa Irglova moves to town and marries her man. Plus: Death Ships finally drop their second full-length, and rumors of Sharkula’s demise are greatly exaggerated

It's wedding bells for one Chicago rock 'n' roll couple: recent local transplant and Swell Season front woman Marketa Irglova wed her beau, Soma engineer Tim Iseler, in a civil ceremony last week. The pair produced Irglova's solo debut this winter, and Anti- will release it in October. Gossip Wolf sends a big, hairy congratulations to the newlyweds!

Local indie-pop act Death Ships have supported big names like Low, the Decemberists, and Tapes 'n Tapes. They've even had their stable of country-fried, radio-ready folk-rock tunes featured on several prominent TV shows—ever heard of the CW's The Vampire Diaries or MTV's 16 & Pregnant? Apparently, Death Ships are all the rage with pregnant teenage vampires. Anyway, main dude Dan Maloney tells this Wolf that the four-piece just released Circumstantial Chemistry, their first full-length since their 2006 debut, Seeds of Devastation. It's been available digitally and on CD for a couple weeks, and Maloney hopes to press a vinyl version too. They're celebrating the album's arrival Sat 7/30 at Schubas with Like Pioneers and Blasted Diplomats.

Trivia question! What do actor Jeff Goldblum, Black Flag drummer Chuck Biscuits, and poet Thax Douglas have in common with Gossip Wolf's favorite free-associative local rapper, Sharkula? They've all been subjects of death hoaxes! Last week, reports of Sharkula's demise spread on Twitter, but this Wolf is glad to report that the man is very much alive—and popular! He tells Gossip Wolf he got 100 voice-mail messages from concerned citizens "in tears." "I never want to leave the earth," he says. "I'm just getting started." Nobody has copped to starting the rumor, but Sharkula says it's a "good thing people were worried and stuff." In a month he's heading to New Orleans to record his next album; in the meantime, he suggests that anyone who wants to make sure he's alive call him at 773-508-6654.
