Al Green, the R & B hitmaker turned Baptist minister, holds together this 1984 video through the awesome force of his personality. Green's father forbade popular music in the home, playing only gospel, and after a colorful, perhaps rebellious youth as a pop idol, Green returned to his father's music (as one lyric put it, “It's you that I want and Him that I need”). Whether he's speaking in interviews or singing, Green's shifts in demeanor and tone of voice are extraordinarily expressive, and the sermon taped at his Full Gospel Tabernacle in Memphis, a mix of speech and song, is truly memorable. Robert Mugge directed. 94 min.
