Re: “Chicago is the photo op in Mayor Rahm's potential presidential campaign

The Daley Saga was like living through the Godfather, Parts I & II. The downward spiral was awful to watch, but worse to be a victim of. In comes RE and, who would have thunk it? He is worse! He is a loose cannon going in all directions at once and not achieving anything. RE appears as insincere as is humanly possible, totally unctuous and smarmy. He is a cipher and the citizens of Chicago know it, but do not know how or where to turn. Iceberg, straight ahead!

Re: “Today's lesson: charters do not outperform unionized schools

The education of the young in our society is an extremely complex, complicated, nuanced and important undertaking. There are so many factors that contribute to the success of an individual or group of individuals. Income, genetics, social environment, teachers, class size, administration, politics, supplies, on and on and on. All data is malleable and, to paraphrase Twain, "Stats lie, liars use stats". There are no simple answers. Parental choice is hardly an infallible dictator of a child's success, graduation rates are as unreliable as ALL test scores or grades (does anyone remember Marla Collins?), poor teachers are culpable regardless of their salaries or length of service, longer school days in a failing situation is no answer ("the food here is terrible, and, what's worse, the portions are so small"), etc., etc. Yet it appears that Mr. Emanuel, Mr. Rangel and Mr. Rauner believe that if we only eliminate the CTU all will be well in the CPS world. Complex issues require much serious and honest thought and communication. More gun-control laws alone will not stop violence, simply incarcerating drug addicts will not eradicate drug abuse or trafficking and it's directly related and ancillary crime and violence, teen sexual abstinence alone will not eliminate STDs or unwanted pregnancies. We seem to always look for a "silver bullet" or "magic beans" solution to our problems. The sorry state of education in the USA did not come about simply because teachers got bad, or organized. It will not be made healthy solely by debilitating the CTU. Also, Esteban Gutierrez, for the record, GM did not go under SIMPLY because of agreements non-union, salaried management freely entered into to and the state of California's dire financial situation is due much more to incredible non-union, white collar crime such as Enron's and the unbelievably anti-governing intrusions of meddlesome laws that tie the hands of any responsible legislative response to the state's problems.
