In the States the only people who’ve ever seemed to like drum ’n’ bass have been ravers, record geeks, and whoever picks the music for car commercials, but in the UK it was chart-topping stuff during its heyday—and back then its most visible face was a Jamaican-Scottish beat maker with a head full of bleached-blond hair and a mouth full of gold teeth. “Inner City Life,” from Goldie’s 1995 album Timeless, is an impeccable minimalist composition consisting of little more than swelling synth pads, a soulful R & B vocal, and a sustained blast of hypnotically complex drum programming—he’s long been several orders of craziness beyond anyone who’s still just messing around with the amen break. And his gifts as a drum ’n’ bass selector—both as a DJ and as the head of the Metalheadz collective-slash-label—are on par with his beat-making skills. Submorphics open. —Miles Raymer
