The highlight of Cosmos Factory (Mexican Summer), a 12-inch EP released last year by local trio Brain Idea, is "Oh I'm Free (Earn Your Card)," a compact two-minute pop gem that stands out from the record's heady and expansive space-indie. Last year Brain Idea bassist-vocalist Ben Scott switched to guitar and started a new band, Outside World, with bassist-vocalist Hazel Rigby and drummer Evan Jenkins; in January 2012 they self-released their first tape, which refines and expands upon what Scott and Brain Idea started with "Oh I'm Free," and played their first shows right around the same time. This is sunny pop, like Guided by Voices except more stable, and with a heavy Husker Du influence. Upbeat drums and jangly guitars on open chords buoy endearingly awkward boy-girl harmonies and warm melodies that make you nostalgic for your youth. Where was Outside World during my formative years? A new EP, Seaside Nowhere, is due at the end of the month on Night-People Records. —Luca Cimarusti Golden Birthday headlines; Dunes and Outside World open.
