Going the Distance

A San Francisco journalism student (Drew Barrymore) captures the heart of a commitment-phobic New York record promoter (Justin Long), who's forced to choose between her and his male pals after their affair turns long-distance. Jason Sudeikis and Charlie Day are hilariously profane as Long's friends, though Barrymore adds a feminine touch to the gross-out jokes. There's also some gallows humor about the record and newspaper industries, but overall this is a light, genial comedy about denial and self-defense. Christina Applegate gives a tart performance as Barrymore's screwy, protective sister, and Ron Livingston slyly underplays his role as Long's sell-out boss. Nanette Burstein (The Kid Stays in the Picture, American Teen) directed.
