Pygmy Lush members Johnny Ward, Mike Taylor, and Chris Taylor cemented their place in Virginia punk lore as three of the soldiers in late-90s screamo army Pg. 99, which didn’t so much play posthardcore as set off electrifying tidal waves of needle-burying fury. After Pg. 99 broke up in 2003, Ward and the Taylor brothers moved on to five-piece Pygmy Lush, and the following year they set off on a strange path that’s taken them further and further from the bombastic music of their past together. The band’s 2007 debut, Bitter River, is an arresting hodgepodge of calamitous punk, blistering grunge, spooky folk, and demented carnival music—whatever well Brand New were drinking from when they made their mammoth, eccentric The Devil and God Are Raging Inside Me, Pygmy Lush went back and drained it. They’ve since gone deeper into black-woods-at-midnight folk, and the best songs on their most recent album, 2011’s Old Friends (Lovitt), are funereal to their core—the echoing acoustic guitars and trembling vocals on “Yellow Hall” will haunt you like a fateful mistake. —Leor Galil
