There are echoes of Taps and A Soldier's Play in Shepsu Aakhu's military school drama about Quinn, a black kid from Chicago who experiences "a brand new alone" in the rural, mostly white world of the Atwood School for Boys. Aakhu tends to over-narrate, and not all the characters register, but this memory play still comes across as a strong--and surprisingly funny--look at how institutional abuse creates a brutal pecking order. It could've been even more compelling if Aakhu had focused on the relationship between Quinn and Whitehead, the only other black kid at Atwood, who has developed his own survival strategy. Still, it's well worth seeing as is. Andrea Dymond keeps the cast of her MPAACT production in tight spit-and-polish form. --Kerry Reid
