To the editors:

Your story on mayoral neglect of children poisoned by lead [Neighborhood News, 25 May] is especially poignant to residents of the 48th Ward. The deciding vote to kill Orr's proposed $1 million addition was cast by Mary Ann Smith.

A referendum on whether the city should spend 33 cents per resident to prevent children from being brain- damaged would sweep this ward. Admittedly, Mrs. Smith owed her seat to Daley and not to the voters. Still, she is listed as the alderman from the 48th Ward, not the alderman from the 5th floor.

Perhaps--when the voters have exercised their choice--Daley can find her a job for which unthinking mayoral loyalty is a more appropriate qualification.
