When your parents saw this movie, it was called My Favorite Year (1982) and concerned a young TV writer in the 1950s who's ordered to chaperone a drunken, washed-up matinee idol (Peter O'Toole) through the rehearsal and live broadcast of a prime-time variety show. Now it's the latest comedy from the Judd Apatow factory, and the comic premise still works like a charm. Jonah Hill is a record-company intern sent to London to collect dissolute rock god Russell Brand (reprising his role from Forgetting Sarah Marshall) and deliver him to a comeback concert at the Greek Theater in Los Angeles. As in My Favorite Year, the laughs all come from seeing a nervous innocent pulled into the star's debauchery, the heart from our growing realization that debauchery is just emptiness with the volume cranked. Nicholas Stoller directed.
