Geronimo!, the Kyle Sowashes, Morning Arms, Mallwalkers, Predators

When: Sat., Aug. 3, 10 p.m. 2013
Price: $5
Locals Geronimo! have been getting sharper (and louder) with every release, and when front man Kelly Johnson sent me “Genius Is Dead,” a track from their recent six-song tape Buzz Yr Girlfriend Vol. 3: The Metal David Byrne (Exploding in Sound), I knew right away it was their best collection yet. “Genius” is vintage Trail of Dead—crystalline, reverb-loaded guitar, driving bass, and all—and eventually blows out into snarling 90s grunge with its garbled distortion filtered through another pedal or three. The 90s sound is nothing new to the trio; their 2012 full-length, Exanimate, sounds like a beaten-together amalgamation of Mudhoney, the hardest-hitting R.E.M. songs, and various angsty, grudge-holding alt-rock bands. But The Metal David Byrne packs an extra punch—and actually sounds pissed off here and there—thanks to pumped-up production and Johnson’s heightened confidence in his yelling abilities. Geronimo! is writing new material this summer and plans to head into the studio in November to record their next full-length for Exploding in Sound. —Kevin Warwick The Kyle Sowashes, Morning Arms, Mallwalkers, and Predators open.
