Of all the bands in emo’s newest class, I haven’t heard any skew as close to the otherworldly postrock of Appleseed Cast as New Jersey’s Gates. The weightless, echoing opening riff to “At Last the Loneliest of Them,” from last year’s debut full-length, Bloom & Breathe (Pure Noise), had me double-checking to make sure I wasn’t actually playing the Appleseed Cast’s high-water mark, the double album Low Level Owl. Gates’ refined performance on Bloom & Breathe (not to mention the members’ talent) sharpens the heavenly tracks—it’s like gazing at a colorful, sparkling constellation, except via a high-power telescope. The clarity has adverse effects, however (even I have my limits). For instance, the bare production on the acoustic “Marrow” lends a distractingly histrionic quality to a song jammed with overwrought lyrics (“I want the pain / Of loneliness in me again / I want the end / I want to know where I begin”). But one bum moment can’t drag down an impressive album. —Leor Galil
