Gaslight Anthem, Bouncing Souls, Cory Branan

When: Fri., March 1, 8 p.m. 2013
If it were possible to screw up an album of pensive, gruff-voiced beardo rock by drowning it in anthems, Brian Fallon would be living on the edge. Ever since his band the Gaslight Anthem broke out with the 2008 album The ’59 Sound, they’ve been combining a tatted-up, greaser-style facade with sing-along punk rock a la Hot Water Music and Rise Against, piling on more whoa-whoas and sha-la-las with each subsequent release. Last year’s Handwritten (Mercury) lacks the muddy, gritty guitar and earnest, stripped-down punk production of The ’59 Sound—rampant popularity and strings of sold-out shows are bound to erode the wistful, dark-horse mentality of your lyrics and make you want to play at being Springsteen—but if you think Fallon wouldn’t install cruise control in a vintage ’57 Chevy convertible, you’re out of your damn mind. When the next record arrives, I won’t be expecting these guys to do anything but more of what they do best: write anthem after anthem and be the Gaslight Anthem. —Kevin Warwick The Bouncing Souls and Cory Branan open.
