Like Finland's Varttina or the Tuvan Republic's Huun-Huur-Tu, Garmarna weds an indigenous tradition and a contemporary presentation. The group's stringed instruments--hurdy-gurdy, fiddle, guitar--drone and skirl around the singing of Emma Hardelin as she articulates the stark, indelible melodies that are the heart of Swedish folk music. But they're not hidebound traditionalists; Jens Hoglin's powerful drumming lends their music a drive that makes it friendly to rock-infected ears. A judicious use of electronics gives Garmarna's album Vittrad a modern sheen, but fiddles, drums, and voice should predominate at the band's Chicago debut. Cordelia's Dad opens. Thursday, 8 PM, Coronet Theatre, 817 Chicago, Evanston; 708-733-0030 or 559-1212.
