Iymen Chehade's drama centers on a loving Palestinian family living in a refugee camp in the West Bank. The parents--a housewife and a moderate religious scholar--strive to make their home a haven of decency and order amid the daily humiliations they face under Israeli occupation. All that goes to hell, though, when a checkpoint soldier rapes their daughter and shoots their youngest son, leaving the elder son to stew in his dangerous hatred. Chehade, who also directs, obviously wants to counteract the stereotype of Palestinians as violent fanatics. But a melodramatic plot, one-dimensional characters, and wobbly acting work against him. Only one character really comes alive: the father, who thinks he can save his family by minding his own business and winds up trampled and broken anyway. --Zac Thompson
