Swiss filmmaker Lionel Baier and his nonprofessional star Pierre Chatagny reportedly worked very closely in developing Chatagny's character, Loic, and the result is a painfully intimate portrait of a young man searching for his place in the world (2004). Estranged from his bourgeois parents, Loic toils in a candy factory by day and cruises for gay sex on the Internet by night, always returning to the apartment of his confidant and quasi girlfriend, Marie (Natacha Koutchoumov), who apparently tolerates his exploits. When Loic meets the older Lionel (played by the director, who interestingly remains offscreen), he finds someone who prefers true intimacy to sex, which both intrigues and unnerves him. Baier's interweaving of documentary-style sequences with poetic, dreamlike imagery underscores the competition between Loic's harsh external circumstance and his lyrical internal yearnings for a better life. In French with subtitles. 94 min.
