A group show at the Ann Nathan Gallery

Checking Out

Checking Out

Chris Ganz

"The times call for group shows," says Victor Armendariz, assistant director of the Ann Nathan Gallery. "So many artists aren't getting exposure. "Also, it's always interesting to see how works play off one another." The 15 artists featured in Gallery Group, Ann Nathan's current exhibition, vary widely in their subject matter and choice of media but fit the gallery's focus on realism and figurative art. Rendered in muted colors, Andrew Woolbright's Man With Guitar looks washed out and worn by time. Yet it's got a raw, lively quality best expressed by the subject's left arm, which drips into the patterned wallpaper in the background. Chris Ganz's charcoal-and-paper Checking Out is a self-portrait set in an endless-seeming department store, where Ganz appears as multiple cashiers, waiting customers, and dejected-looking men either lying on check-out conveyor belts or sitting in shopping carts. An associate professor at Indiana University-Purdue University in Fort Wayne, Ganz habitually alters his appearance, growing a mustache or shaving his head to take on the different personalities he presents in his self-portraits. Rose Freymuth-Frazier's oil paintings depict modern women in a style that's at once Renaissance-flavored and kitschy, Juan Luis Jardi's nostalgic works are similar to Woolbright's in terms of color scheme but evoke the mid-20th century, and Jean Roberts-Guequierre's carnivalesque pieces often parody Hieronymus Bosch. The gallery will switch out works throughout the month, so consider making repeat visits.
