Re: “Two students, two high schools, two divergent paths to college

Excellent story. To those of you who live in Chicago's northern suburbs: get involved with United We Learn! We're a group of residents who came together in 2008 when State Sen. Rev. Meeks led a boycott and rally at New Trier High School on the first day of school for CPS, highlighting the fact that reliance on the property tax to fund public schools rewards affluent (which are also predominantly white in this highly segregated region) areas. We produced a video, "The Education They Deserve" (http://vimeo.com/14415846), that shows what this Reader story does -- that separate is not equal. Know that there are folks on the North Shore who are as outraged as Chicagoans on behalf of *all* Illinois students. I helped organize United We Learn through a fair housing lens, as the executive director of the Interfaith Housing Center of the Northern Suburbs (www.interfaithhousingcenter.org), a 40-year-old grassroots housing justice group based in Winnetka.
