Our Review

Richard McCracken, a former banker, had his conversion experience at the storied Montreal deli Schwartz's, where he first laid his hands on Montreal-style smoked meat, aka viande fumée, aka pastrami. Be warned: this mom-and-pop stand in the Chicago French Market may well make a convert of you too. The smoked meat here is salted and cured beef brisket made with more cracked black peppercorns and seasonings than the New York-style pastrami most of us are familiar with, and to my mind, it's also fattier, smokier, and more flavorful. Piled in chunks on fresh Red Hen rye with Dijon mustard, it constitutes one of Chicago's best sandwiches. There are other good things to try, like a signature sandwich of Gypsy bacon (made with pork belly), Danish bacon, and boiled ham, or a monster breakfast sandwich with egg, cheese, and your choice of meat, slathered with house-made red pepper aioli and served on a bagel from New York Bagel & Bialy. But it's hard to beat that pastrami, and if it's what you're after, get there early.
