According to their website, the members of Ex-Pats Theatre Company hope to "shine light on the unseen, the forgotten, the disenfranchised, the unheard." In the group's first full-length production, the lights are shining, all right, but the results are revolting. Performed in an appropriately dank basement with church-pew seating that enhances its religious overtones, Caridad Svich's saga of rail-riding Downcast Mary and Troubled John is by turns disturbing and barbaric. The play doesn't offer nearly enough redemption to justify all the retching and violence. What's commendable is the cast's commitment to such unrelentingly repulsive roles—especially JoAnn DeAngelo, as a mute older woman called Providence who falls victim to a horrific sexual assault. —Marissa Oberlander
