Environmental activist Josh Tickell makes his directing debut with this high-powered, well-researched documentary on what he clearly feels is the most important issue of our time: himself. Actually, the film is mostly about America’s addiction to oil, the devastating environmental and political consequences (including the Iraq war), and the potential solutions offered by renewable alternatives like used cooking oil. But Tickell and writer Johnny O’Hara take on too much, from the history of the U.S. auto industry to the science of oil and gas production, wrapping it all around a biography of Tickell. He’s passionate and informed, but by the fourth close-up of him staring into the sun thinking big thoughts, the movie has run out of biofuel.
