Fruit Tree Backpack/Madeleine Remains

When: Sun., July 25 and Mon., July 26 2010
Price: $12
Most of what's here is predictably good. It's no surprise, for instance, that Madeleine Remains, Michael Martin's new portrait of Andre Gide's wife/beard/muse, is a thoughtful, occasionally arresting exploration of celebrity's dark underbelly--one of Martin's favorite subjects. Or that Barrie Cole's Fruit Tree Backpack--comprising three fragments from a doomed relationship--is at once literate, naive, shadowy, and psychologically probing. Or that Eric Ziegenhagen's quiet, understated production of the Cole piece casts an alluring spell. But who knew playwright Marisa Wegrzyn--one of the Reader's 2008 choices for best playwright--would turn out to be such an ingeniously subtle actress? She follows Cole's singularly circuitous path without a moment's misstep. This 75-minute double bill is smart, engaging, and satisfying. --Justin Hayford
