From Every Mountainside/Or Will It Explode?

When: Fridays, Saturdays. Continues through Nov. 23 2013
Price: $20
The concept is cringe inducing: an ensemble-created performance piece "exploring events before, during and after" Martin Luther King Jr.'s March on Washington. And it's staged in a church basement, no less. But Halcyon Theatre's cagey, rapid-fire vignettes avoid the sanctimony that typically turns such endeavors numbingly irrelevant. Director Tony Adams's candid, unpolished seven-person cast present an agreeably muddled 90 minutes in which the autobiographical, the fictional, and the literary-historical intertwine in unpredictable, inventive, and, more often than not, beguiling ways. The show rarely makes it obvious where our sympathies should lie: one of the more sympathetic characters is a semireformed white supremacist meth dealer. And while contemporary racial politics get short shrift, the messiness of life in Jim Crow America is vibrantly rendered. —Justin Hayford
