Frode Gjerstad Trio with Steve Swell 18+ Free Recommended Soundboard

When: Wed., Nov. 19, 9:30 p.m. 2014
Price: free
When reedist Frode Gjerstad committed himself to free music in the 70s, he had a hard time finding collaborators in his native Norway sympathetic to his penchant for impassioned expression and timbral exploration. His solution to this problem was two-pronged: seek out like-minded players abroad, such as British percussionist John Stevens and South African bassist Johnny Dyani, and raise some up at home. Those strategies converge in the group he brings to Constellation tonight. Drummer Paal Nilssen-Love, at 39 one of the world’s premier improvising percussionists, started playing with Gjerstad at age 15, and among the fruits of their time-cured chemistry is a shared knack for generating intensity across a broad dynamic spectrum. For this tour veteran New Jersey-based trombonist Steve Swell, who’s played in large ensembles led by Rob Mazurek and Ken Vandermark, will join Gjerstad’s trio (ordinarily just Nilssen-Love and bassist Jon Rune Strøm). Gjerstad and Swell have only recorded together once, on an album with Sabir Mateen called Sound Gathering (Not Two), but both have a big sound and the ability to infuse energy into whatever they play. The augmented trio will play two sets, one alone and one as part of Constellation’s Sound of the City Workshop—local musicians who watch the first are invited to play in the second. —Bill Meyer
