In the cult favorite Fright Night (1985), a fatherless schoolboy begins to suspect that the suave new neighbor (Chris Sarandon) flirting with his mom is a vampire; for help the kid turns to a TV horror movie host (Roddy McDowall) who claims to be a fearless vampire killer. This remake is good fun, aided in no small degree by Colin Farrell's strutting, dead-eyed performance as the bloodsucker and Christopher Mintz-Plasse's early appearance as a geeky classmate of the hero’s who falls prey to Farrell's nocturnal appetites (director Craig Gillespie wisely retains the original movie's make-up design, with its awful rictus of fangs). The big innovation here is moving the action to Las Vegas and turning the vampire expert into a decadent hotel-lounge performer; unfortunately, actor David Tennant, best known for playing Doctor Who on the BBC, lacks the star wattage the role demands. With Anton Yelchin, Toni Collette, Imogen Poots, and a funny cameo by Sarandon.
