Jamsheed Akrami's informative if prolix video introduction to Iranian cinema in the 90s intercuts interviews and clips from landmark films. Among the key artists interviewed are festival favorites such as Abbas Kiarostami (Taste of Cherry), Mohsen Makhmalbaf (Gabbeh), and Dariush Mehrjui (The Cow), as well as two women filmmakers and an actress. They talk about everything from content to government control to emerging feminism and sometimes offer contradictory views, but they?re all upbeat about the future. One drawback is Akrami's excessive reliance on the opinion of New York film festival programmer Richard Pena, the only non-Iranian talking head.
