Mark St. Germain's two-person play is a what-if historical contrivance offering a fictional cage match of the minds between atheist Sigmund Freud and Christian apologist C.S. Lewis. Set at the time of Hitler's invasion of Poland, which triggered World War II, it's a smart, funny bull session with a touch of 'Night Mother thrown in (Freud has oral cancer and openly discusses his impending suicide.) A few obvious jokes about couches and cigars slip into the dialogue, but Martin Rayner and Mark Dold deliver such assured and passionate performances that one forgives the occasional smug jest. Tyler Marchant's staging captures a threnody of incipient loss, underscored by radio reports of the Nazi offensive. —Kerry Reid
