Fresh & Onlys, Radar Eyes 17+ Early Warnings (Music) Recommended Soundboard

When: Sat., July 6, 10 p.m. 2013
Price: $12
I was more than a little surprised by the modern-rock sheen of Long Slow Dance (Mexican Summer), the most recent album by San Francisco’s Fresh & Onlys. Given the four-piece’s earlier garage-rock sound, I wasn’t expecting to think of the Church or Modern English when I first listened to the new record—but front man Tim Cohen has never been easily pigeonholed, and the band’s love for melody has always been stronger than its loyalty to any specific rock subgenre. Long Slow Dance contains the Fresh & Onlys’ dreamiest, most indelible melodies yet, wedded to lyrics about romantic yearning and disappointment. The wistful “Dream Girls” laments that it’s impossible to “get” the perfect girl because she can’t be idealized and attainable at the same time, while the title track telegraphs failure from its very first lines: “You supply the innocent mind / And I’ll bring the guilty heart.” —Peter Margasak Radar Eyes open.
