When: Fri., Nov. 9, 8 p.m. 2012
Price: $30-$100
Born in Morocco but based in the Bronx, rapper French Montana has spent years on knowledgeable critics' short lists of MCs on the verge of superstardom, but a series of stalled major-label deals has kept him stuck in the street-mixtape world. On the one hand this is a shame, because it means that big, broad, crossover-friendly tracks like "New York Minute" haven't had a chance to blow up the way they deserved to. But on the other hand the situation has allowed Montana to develop his talents and his corner-boy-turned-mogul persona to the point where they match his immense cockiness. His long-awaited official debut, Excuse My French, is supposed to drop in December as a joint release by Bad Boy Records and Rick Ross's Maybach Music Group, and the chart success of advance single "Pop That" (featuring Ross, Lil Wayne, Drake, and an insanely hooky Luther Campbell sample) bodes well for its chances. In the meantime check out Coke Boys 3, the latest mixtape from the Montana's Coke Boys crew, which blends NYC street grit with the easygoing menace of classic California G-funk. —Miles Raymer Bo Deal, M.I.C, AFM, and P Coakley open.
