Fred Lonberg-Holm's Lightbox Orchestra Member Picks Recommended Soundboard

When: Wed., May 21, 9:30 p.m. 2014
Price: $12
For more than 15 years, cellist Fred Lonberg-Holm has been assembling unusual cross sections of musicians to play in his Lightbox Orchestra, a conducted improvising group that uses colored lights and instructions (abstract, literal, pictorial) to shape long-form pieces. Lately Lonberg-Holm seems to be convening the orchestra only sporadically, and when he does so it’s often to indulge a pretty ballsy conceit—a concert in 2011, for instance, featured members and associates of the band Joan of Arc, which is hardly known for its free-improv prowess. This week’s group is an even more outrageous proposition—a nine-piece all-drummer edition. With the exception of Norwegian ringer Ståle Liavik Solberg, the lineup is a veritable who’s who of Chicago-based free-improv percussionists: Tim Daisy, Charles Rumback, Glenn Kotche, John Niekrasz, Marc Riordan, Frank Rosaly, Michael Zerang, and Mikel Avery. If anyone can get all those drummers to do something coherent together, it’s Lonberg-Holm. —Peter Margasak
