Like his countrymen Daft Punk and Air, French producer and DJ Fred Falke blends smooth disco and house with proggy synthesizer psychedelia in a way that can evoke nostalgia for a utopian dance scene that only ever existed in Francois K.’s 80s remixes. Falke’s work is firmly rooted in dance music’s early days, when it was truly an underground affair, but he’s not the type of hard-line classicist whose concern for educating an audience can intrude on the fun they’re trying to have. Amiability and accessibility rank high among his priorities, and his music seems engineered to provide the kind of joyful, worry-dissolving transcendence that old-school masters such as Larry Levan and Frankie Knuckles specialized in—if you pick up a little history lesson along the way, all the better. Like Francois K., Falke has a pop-friendly sociability that’s made him an in-demand remixer, and over the past decade his client list has included Kesha, Katy Perry, Selena Gomez, U2, and Dutch mega-DJ Tiesto, whose typically outsize arena banger “Red Lights” Falke reduced to a comfortably human scale. —Miles Raymer
