Comedy
Sad-sack character actor Fred Stoller (Everybody Loves Raymond) wrote and stars in this apparently autobiographical comedy about his friendship with a lovable freeloader named Vinnie D'Angelo. On the advice of a therapist, Stoller phones Vinnie in Philadelphia and invites him out to Los Angeles for some good times, not realizing he'll be stuck with the guy for months as Vinnie goes through the motions of trying to find a job on the west coast. At one point, Fred Willard and some other comics turn up outside the Egyptian Theatre after a show, which adds to the impression that, like a lot of Hollywood indie comedy, the film was hatched to provide work for guys hanging around the Comedy Store. A sad and sentimental ending provides a weird coda to the shticky humor, and the shift in tones is more than director Steve Skrovan can handle.
