Re: “An interview with veteran special effects supervisor Scott Squires (part two)

I work strictly with Photoshop in print advertising and I've had the same issues. I strive to insert the company's product into a stock photo as realistically as possible and it takes time. Whereas someone can just seem to drop it in and do 5 images a day, they don't look as if they are actually there.

Shadows and dark surfaces are "reflective" too, not just light surfaces or sources, shadows create dark areas and I finally figured this out looking at real images and noticing the levels or grades of darkness and this was the problem I was having in making the product look real sitting against a wall.

Even now, my old boss thinks $100 will cover the amount of time it takes me to develop his logo concept, so I've already put in 8 hours of work on a rejected idea. If he was still my employer, I would have been paid for that time. There is no respect in the arts industry.

The blog also answers one of my biggest peeves, the seemingly lack of knowledge of physics in CGI movement. it's not the artists that can't get it real, it's the director.
